What's good to do?

Some time ago, I was encouraged to ask myself the question 'what's good to do?' in any given moment, particularly if I was feeling doubtful or unsure. It is a question that has stood me in very good stead since, and so today I wanted to say a little about it.

What's good to do? is a question you can ask with various contexts in mind. What's good to do for me? What's good to do for the people I love and/or am responsible to? What's good to do for my community, country, for people at large? What's good to do for the planet? It's q question that can prompt deep reflection.

It's also a question that uncovers complexity and paradox. In reality, we are continually balancing diverse interests and concerns, the best we can do is pick our way through guided by our moral compass and a reflective sense of what is right. You can not always please everyone, nor should you.

I have, however, found that doing the right thing lends life a simplicity. I find my conscience clearer when I take the time to reflect and respond to situations rather than react, and I find that having considered my actions lends me a peace of mind that is not there when I act from fear, obligation or on auto-pilot.

A life well lived is one deliberately lived, aligned with your values and cognisant of your perception of purpose. Don't get me wrong, this is not an easy path, nor does it mean that you always get it right, such a thing is not possible. Being honest with yourself and making amends when mistakes are made is an important part of living authentically, looking deeply at your own self is in itself good to do.

Psychotherapy is not only here for you in times of crisis. It is also here to help you live life well, in alignment with your values and the person you want to be. If you want to explore authenticity and connection in your life, then do get in touch and let's talk. You can reach me at fejrobinson@gmail.com or on 01325 790495.
