Evolution trumps revolution

In personal change terms evolving at a steady pace is a great way to go. Making small changes, consolidating them, and building on them gradually can lead to lasting change that is built on firm foundations.

It can be tempting to go for all out revolution and to make big changes or several changes at once. However, anyone who has tried this method of changing habits will likely tell you that it is a hard road and it can be difficult to make change like this stick.

Whether you are changing the way you relate to people, for example reducing people pleasing, or building healthier habits to support health and self esteem, approaching it with consideration and mindfulness will lead to more lasting and effective change than an all out assault on your previous way of doing things will.

It’s important to remember you arrived at the situation you are in for good and important reasons. Those habits you want to kick at some point were the best options available, and in this light it’s easier to see that they served you then, however problematic they now seem to be.

Respecting the past and still evolving in the present towards a more congruent future is important, and it can be a testing experience. If psychotherapy would help you to find your way forwards and be both supported and accountable for the changes you seek, then get in touch and let’s make a start.
