What is trauma recovery?

What does it mean to recover from being traumatized? I like Babette Rothschild’s description. She defines recovery as understanding that the event we were truamatised by is over and in the past. She adds to this that recovery means you are free of symptoms like visual or bodily flashbacks and dissociation, and that you have a good quality of life. We can’t undo the things that have happened to us. We can, however, change how they impact us here and now, and have a different relationship to them.

If you have experienced things in the past that intrude on you still and impact your day to day well-being, seek help. It doesn’t have to be that way, there are treatments available.
