Balance enables health and performance

I was reminded recently of the synergy between my old profession as a leadership development coach and trainer, and my current work as a psychotherapist. It led me to reflect on the tools and skills that I used in my corporate life when I was working with leaders.
The one that stood out to me to talk about was the life balance wheel, which might sound a bit strange given the corporate world's obsession with productivity and results. However, its not as strange as it might seem. It was my experience consistently that leaders (or anyone else for that matter) who are out of balance, are unable to perform at their best. Balance enables health and performance. Without balance there is no good physical or mental health, and there is ineffective or unsustainable performance.
The idea with a life balance wheel is that you draw a circle, and then divide it up into pie slices, with one slice for each area of your life that is important to you. For example, you might have a slice for family, health, friends, work, romance, home, learning, creativity...anything that is a fundamental value or part of your life.
You then chart on the wheel how satisfied you are with each of these areas of your life. Great fulfilment would be the outer rim of the circle, crisis point would be the centre. You draw out how big each pie section is based on your current experience of that area. This gives you a map of where life is going well, and in which areas you are not feeling fulfilled. I recommend then taking only one or two areas that you want to focus on, and reflecting on what you want to do to increase your satisfaction in that area.
In the area you are focusing on, you might reflect on what is prompting it to be as it is, and most importantly, create a strong sense of what good would look like in this area. you need a strong why? to energise you to take action.
You might also ask:
What energy am I prepared to put in to change this area of life?
What do I want to stop doing?
What do I want to start doing?
What changes do I want to make to how I am doing things?
Who can support and encourage me?
What challenges do I anticipate? How will I overcome them?
