Offer what you have to offer with good clinical supervision

When I was a trainee therapist many moons ago, my then supervisor shared these words of wisdom with me.
“Offer what you have to offer
Offer it with love
Let go of having it work”
Most psychotherapists and counsellors do their work because they want to help, they want to see clients heal and recover. This is a powerful motivation and it would be worrying were it not the case.
It is an irony then that having a neutral stance, being able to offer what is needed form a position of balance and grounding, is essential to enable relational healing to take place. If we step in too much we risk unconsciously telling our clients we do not believe in their capacity to heal. We need to convey with our whole being our trust in them, and in the process of psychotherapy.
So, we offer what we have to offer. We offer it without condition, in a loving, open energy. Then, we let go of what happens next, and we trust.
Sadly I don’t know the reference to honour whomever imparted the wisdom, but I am thankful nonetheless.
