Are you ready to stop?

​A persistent theme in therapeutic work is the need to stop. To pause. To take a breath.

When it is needed, psychotherapy can become a weekly space for just that. Time to sit, with no specific expectations, no to do list, no requirement to achieve something.

Therapeutic work at its best is punctuated by pauses. By space to sit with what has just been said. To explore more deeply. To go beyond the continual flow of surface expressions that characterise many non-therapeutic conversations.

To learn something new, we first must loosen our hold on what we currently think we know.  To become unsure, curious, unsettled even.

This process takes time, space, and trust. It takes a commitment to honesty from both therapist and client, and a willingness to challenge and to be challenged.

If you want psychotherapy to be real and authentic, an enabling step is to prepare to stop. To pause. To let go. To dance with the unknown.
